Artwork for a story titled ‘Discovering Dizdar’ written by Nadja Lovadinoc, featured in Chutney Magazine, Issue Four.
A beautiful piece centered around the work of Bosnian poet Mak Dizdar and the medieval tombstones of Bogomilli found across Bosnia and Herzegovina, looking to them as a way to explore mixed Yugoslavian identity and resistance in the face of nationalist narratives.
I wanted to explore portraying the found symbolism on the tombstones through imagery that relates to embroidery / tapestries, a craft found across the Balkans / Yugoslavia which exists in many different forms. Also the feeling of the burning heat in the mountain valleys of Bosnia, driving in a Volvo exploring the tombstones.
